Ad Astra (An Illustrated Guide to Leaving the Planet) - Dallas Campbell

Need some space? For 250,000 years humans have been firmly rooted to the Earth. And sure it's got some good things going for it: nice views, friendly people, good coffee... But if you're looking for a complete change of scene, or just a bit of a break, then this book has all the information you'll need: A complete guide to getting off the planet, from science broadcaster and documentary maker, Dallas Campbell. The wonderful thing about space is that it's a truly multidisciplinary subject: Engineering, history, politics, physics, maths, biology, chemistry, planetary science, art, music, geology, travel, exploration and extreme sewing! Pretty much all science, art and culture is involved in our quest to explore the cosmos. Delving into the rich and unusual history of space travel, from the Jacobeans to Elon Musk's Space X, Dallas uses his own vast experience as well as interviews and advice from astronauts, scientists, politicians and the movers and shakers who can help you leave planet earth. From the tortoises that flew to the moon, a history of the spacesuit, whether or not you need a passport, to hair-raising tales of when it all goes wrong, this is an eclectic, fun and beautifully illustrated 'mix tape' of human space travel stories for anyone who has looked up to the stars and wondered. Ad Astra: An Illustrated Guide to Leaving the Planet is perfect for readers of Brian Cox, Jim Al-Khalili, the bestselling What If? by Randall Munroe and 13 Journeys Through Space and Time with the Royal Institution and for the child in all of us who dreamt about becoming an astronaut with 'The Right Stuff'.
