This compilation of Maori oral literature was commissioned in 1879 by the New Zealand government to help preserve indigenous traditions. The ethnographer John White (1826-91) collected the texts and provided accompanying English translations. Volume 3 (1887) includes narratives about the rainbow god Uenuku, and the South Island Maori.
