Czech Modern Architecture – Vladimír Šlapeta

Czech Modern Architecture represents the extraordinary opus magnum of Prof. Vladimír Šlapeta - a comprehensive and, to date, the most extensive overview of Czech architecture from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. The publication offers a clear chronological narrative complemented by more than 900 photographs of buildings, plans, and archival materials that place architecture within broader historical, cultural, and social contexts. The book was created in cooperation with dozens of museums, galleries, regional institutions, archives, and professional research centres from across the Czech Republic and presents a representative selection of the finest achievements of Czech architecture over more than 125 years - from Cubism and interwar Functionalism, through post-war experiments, to contemporary architecture after 1989. With exceptional erudition, the author interconnects individual buildings, personalities, and periods into a coherent whole that presents Czech architecture as a distinctive and internationally respected phenomenon. The publication is not merely a catalogue of buildings, but a fundamental synthesis of architectural history, giving architecture context, continuity, and meaning. The book was officially presented at the European Parliament in Brussels, accompanied by a major exhibition. It is an outstanding title intended for professionals, students, and all readers seeking to understand Czech architecture in its full breadth and depth.
