French Encounter with Africans - Cohen, William B.

Traces the ways in which negative attitudes toward blacks became deeply embedded in French culture. Examining the forces that shaped these views, this book shows the inequality of French interactions with blacks in Africa and in the slave colonies of the West Indies. It is useful for those dealing with issues of racism, ethnicity, and identity.
