Lies Weeping - Glen Cook

From Glen Cook, the godfather of Grimdark, comes Lies Weeping, the first book in an all-new arc in the legendary Chronicles of the Black Company - the landmark series that changed the face of fantasy. Scattered from their disastrous campaign across worlds, the Black Company left too many of their number buried in the ground before finally retreating across the plain of glittering stone. On the other side of the plain lies Hsien, their one-time base in the Land of Unknown Shadows, and with it the promise of safety - of a sort. Amidst the struggle to rebuild what is left of the Company, Arkana and Shukrat, the two young Voroshks now reluctantly serving as the Company's annalists, find themselves haunted by vague omens and the threat of starvation. But, even more disturbing, are sightings of a strange, ragged creature, that appears to be wearing the body of the left-behind Croaker...
