This book critically evaluates the nineteenth-century intellectual movement in Maharashtra. Rich in primary archival resources, it traces the roots of Indian rationality in indigenous intellectual traditions. The study presents a new understanding of nineteenth-century intellectuals, including Mahatma Phule and Pandita Ramabai, as well as the burgeoning national movement.
