Sacred Pain - Glucklich, Ariel (Associate Professor of Theology, Associate Professor of Theology, Georgetown University)

Physical pain ranks as one of the great evils of human life. Yet religious individuals and groups inflict pain on themselves and on others in pursuit of religious goals. Glucklich shows that a ritually controlled regimen of pain can produce a transformation of consciousness in which personal identity yields to identification with spiritual ideals.
