The Economics of Public Issues - John Tommasi

The Economics of Public Issues bridges the gap between abstract economic theory and the real-world outcomes of public policy. Written in clear, accessible language, it explores why well-intentioned programs—from rent control and stimulus spending to climate initiatives—so often lead to results that differ sharply from what policymakers envisioned. Drawing upon decades of experience in law enforcement and academia, the author brings a grounded and engaging perspective on the way incentives, trade-offs, and human behavior shape every public issue. Students and general readers alike will discover how to “think like economists,” using core principles such as opportunity cost, marginal analysis, and unintended consequences to analyze complex policy debates. Organized into four thematic parts, the book examines how economic reasoning applies to markets and regulation, redistribution, globalization, and environmental dimensions. Each chapter combines rigorous analysis with real-world examples and thought-provoking discussion questions, encouraging critical thinking and civic literacy. Designed for classroom use or independent reading, The Economics of Public Issues shows how understanding the why behind unintended outcomes can lead to smarter, more effective public policy. Accompanied by PowerPoint slides, a teaching guide, and MCQs, this book is a crucial companion for undergraduates, MBA students, and instructors who wish to understand that economics is not just about money, but about choice.
