John William Colenso (1814-83) was appointed Bishop of Natal in 1853. He engaged seriously with the indigenous languages and traditions, and published a Zulu grammar (1855) and this substantial dictionary (1861). With over 10,000 entries and many notes on usage, it remained a standard work into the twentieth century.
